Hi, I’m Alice
I’ve been a musician since I was six, when my mother, Sue, taught me three songs on the ukulele. It was so much fun! I was instantly hooked. I thought, “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life!”
But the path wasn’t totally straightforward. Soon after that I was sent off to violin lessons. Since then I’ve played violin and viola in symphony orchestras; fiddle in folk and bluegrass groups; drums and bass in rock bands.
A few years ago I found my way back to my first love, the ukulele, and I’ve never looked back. I play in a 9-member Saturday afternoon ukulele group, the Strumbles, and I’m on the organizing committee of the Waikato Uke Jam. And I love teaching ukulele.
When I’m not making music I’m often writing and thinking about food. My local food blog, the Waikato Foodbasket www.waikatofoodbasket.co.nz, celebrates the delicious food abundance of the heartland of New Zealand, where I live.
My husband, Matthew Bannister, is also a musician, writer and teacher – he’s in one of my favourite rock bands, Sneaky Feelings. We have two 20-something sons, Tom and Albert, and music is a big part of their lives too.
I also love the Beatles. My favourite Beatles album is Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
